The Basics of Sensory Processing and Integration

Sensory processing is the process that organizes sensation from one’s own body and the environment, thus making it possible to use the body effectively within the environment.

Sensory integration (also called multisensory integration or multimodal perception) is how [the brain forms] coherent, valid, and robust perception by processing sensory stimuli from various [sources]. Surrounded by multiple objects and receiving multiple sensory stimulations, the brain [must] categorize the stimuli … to integrate or segregate [the multitude of] sensory signals based on [their relationship to one another].
Sensory processing and integration are the building blocks of how you understand and interact with yourself, other people, and the world around you. Because your life experiences are different than everyone else’s, your perceptions are unique to you.
Believe it or not, you are the only one who sees the world the way you do.
